Robber hits Modesto bank, visits ER

John Hankins, 42, of Contra Costa, was arrested by police officers on suspicion of bank robbery after paying for emergency room services with cash.

POSTED August 29, 2009 11:36 a.m.
A man suspected of robbing a Modesto bank Thursday afternoon was caught hours later handing out cash at an emergency room, according to the Modesto Police Department.
The suspect was sought for a robbery that occurred at the Chase Bank at 2401 Oakdale Rd. in Modesto.
The suspect approached a teller, indicated that he had a gun, and demanded money, Sgt. Brian Findlen said. The robber left with an undisclosed amount of cash and was last seen leaving on foot southbound on Oakdale Road.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Cameras at the bank caught clear views of the suspect. He was described as a white male adult in his late 30s to early 40s, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall to 5 feet, 10 inches tall and between 150 to 170 pounds. He had brown hair in a 5-inch long ponytail, unkempt hair, facial hair with a mustache, possibly salt and pepper, and very yellow and jagged teeth, Findlen said. He was further described as having a dirty appearance and was wearing a Raiders jacket, green T-shirt with a white circular logo on front, dirty blue jeans, and tennis shoes.
About four hours after the robbery was reported, detectives were in the emergency room at Doctors Medical Center for an unrelated call, when they spotted a man matching the description of the suspect. The man was handing out cash to hospital workers for services he had received.
The suspect, later identified as John Hankins, 42, of Contra Costa, started to fight with detectives when they approached him. He was pinned down and taken into custody. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on suspicion of bank robbery.
All the money was recovered.
