Drug overdose claims life of inmate

POSTED August 29, 2009 11:39 a.m.
An inmate from the Stanislaus County Jail was pronounced dead at Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto on Thursday after ingesting narcotics, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.
Manual Dante Dent, 27, of Modesto was found unresponsive in his cell at the Men’s Jail. Sheriff’s deputies and Jail medical staff immediately began CPR. Dent was transported to DMC where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s department.
Dent was arrested Wednesday by the Modesto Police Department on charges of possession of a controlled substance, destruction of evidence, resisting arrest and violating probation.
Dent was observed ingesting something prior to his arrest, the sheriff’s department said. He was initially taken to DMC where he was medically cleared before being booked into the jail.
An autopsy showed that Dent had ingested a bag believed to be narcotics, the sheriff’s department reported. Toxicology results are pending.
