Names of CHP officers involved in shooting released

POSTED June 24, 2011 7:11 p.m.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the three California Highway Patrol officers involved in a shooting Saturday night, but the circumstances that led up to the fatal encounter remains unknown.

Carrick Vigen, 37, of Sacramento was shot to death during a confrontation with three CHP officers at a Valero gas station at W. Main Street and Crowslanding Road, shortly after 9:30 a.m. June 18.

The three officers involved in the shooting were Sgt. Ian Troxell, a 12-year veteran of the CHP; Officer Jonathan Box, who has been with the CHP for three and a half years; and Officer Adam Percey, who has been with the CHP for two and half years.

Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said investigators have gathered witness statements and video surveillance from the gas station and will be turning all of it over to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office. The district attorney’s office will make the final determination on the legality of the shooting, Bejaran said.

The sheriff’s department has released few details about the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation. The sheriff’s department is investigating the shooting because it occurred in the county area between Patterson and Turlock.

The three CHP officers were responding to a report of an armed and possibly suicidal man at the gas station.

Bejaran did say Vigen was found sitting in his truck when the officers arrived.

It’s unknown what kind of weapon Vigen may have had and how many shots were fired. Vigen was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no timeframe for when the case will be turned over to the district attorney’s office.

“We want to be very thorough and exhaust every investigative angle,” Bejaran said.
