Crash claims life of young child

POSTED June 27, 2011 12:37 p.m.

A collision at a well-traveled Turlock intersection Monday morning killed one child and severely injured his sister and mother, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The child was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as 4-year-old Degan Moody of Turlock. His 2-year-old sister Emry Moody and 28-year-old mother Melissa Moody sustained major injuries from the collision as well. Emry Moody was transported by air ambulance to UC Davis Medic al Center. A hospital spokesperson said Tuesday that Emry Moody is in good condition now. Melissa Moody was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center where her condition was last listed as critical.

The collision happened shortly after 9 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Bradbury and Walnut roads.

A 1991 Honda was traveling eastbound on Bradbury and had stopped at the intersection to make a left turn onto Walnut. A 2005 Mini Cooper, driven by Melissa Moody, was also traveling eastbound on Bradbury. For an unknown reason Moody did not see the Honda stopped in front of her, said CHP spokesman Officer Eric Parsons.

Moody tried to take evasive action to avoid striking the Honda and veered toward the shoulder. The right front of the Mini Cooper struck the left rear of the Honda, which caused the Mini Cooper to spin out of control into the westbound lane. At the same time a 1993 Ford Thunderbird was approaching in the westbound lane and hit the Mini Cooper broadside, Parsons said.

Degan Moody was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, Alfredo Correa, 56, of Livingston and his passenger, 17-year-old Abel Cortez, also of Livingston, were transported by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda, 61-year-old Daniel Valle of Turlock was not injured in the crash.

All the parties involved were using vehicle safety restraints and alcohol and drugs are not considered to be a factor in the collision.
