Keyes school vandalized

POSTED July 5, 2011 8:17 p.m.

The air conditioning units at Spratling Middle School in Keyes were hit by vandals over the past week, causing an estimated $34,000 in damage, according to school officials.

Five air conditioning units at the school have been stripped of copper and aluminum parts and wiring over the last week. The school district has brought in a security guard to watch the property overnight, but the latest theft occurred during the daytime hours on Sunday, said Keyes Unified School District Superintendent Karen Poppen.

The district is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact Stanislaus County Sheriff Deputy Noel Vento at 525-7114.
