Warrior soccer on winning streak

POSTED September 1, 2009 8:04 p.m.
It seems like the Cal State Stanislaus men’s soccer team is gradually becoming a serious threat to every opponent.
Lately, the Warriors have been showing that they can take on anyone. The latest victim was Fresno Pacific, which suffered a 2-1 loss at Warrior Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the first regular season game of 2009.
That victory came only three days after Stanislaus stunned Division I’s Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 in an exhibition.
Even so, Warriors first-year coach Dana Taylor didn’t express complete satisfaction.
“I was disappointed in our ability to finish the game at the most critical point of the game due to our lack of fitness,” he said after the Warriors put themselves at 1-0-0.
Victor Regalado scored the Warriors’ two goals.
Next up for Stanislaus is a home match against George Fox at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

CSU Stan women earn three straight
The Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer team has started the season on a hot streak.
The Warriors have won three consecutive contests — though two of them were exhibition games — with a combined score of 8-0 after opening with a 0-0 tie to Sacramento in an exhibition on Aug. 16. They haven’t looked back since.
Their latest victory came against Fresno Pacific on Saturday, in which the Warriors converted two penalty kicks by Alena Smajlagic and Maryanne Sayles. Lisa Garcia added a third goal toward the end of the game.
The Warriors play Central Washington in Nampa, Idaho, at 11 a.m. Saturday.

And they’re off
The Cal State Stanislaus men’s and women’s cross country teams open up the season Saturday at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational in Seaside.
Both teams are more experienced than last season, as Joey Nunes is the top male runner while twin sisters Denali and Rubye Foldager are two of the top female runners.
