Lionel Joseph Carpenter

July 1917 - August 2011

Lionel Joseph Carpenter

POSTED August 12, 2011 10:27 p.m.

Lionel (Bud) Joseph Carpenter was born in Cook, Minnesota in July 1917 to Nazaire and Josephine Carpentier. He married Thelma Sandland in November, 1940 in Grygla, MN. A part of the Greatest Generation, Bud served as a Metalsmith in the U.S. Navy during WWII. During the war they lived in St. Augustine, FL where they survived a hurricane. After the war they settled in Minneapolis. He took a second job to earn the down payment on their first home located in Crystal, MN in 1951.

Bud and Thelma moved "North to Alaska" in 1959. Fittingly, he became a carpenter by trade and constructed his own home. In 1980 Bud announced to Thelma that he had retired. Shortly thereafter they moved to Turlock to be close to their children. They enjoyed traveling to many other states and entertained many guests from Alaska and Minnesota. In November they celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Bud accepted his many physical limitations without complaint. Due to health reasons he moved to Paramount Court in Turlock in December of 2009 where he lived until he completed his earthly journey of 94 years on August 7, 2011 and entered his eternal dwelling place prepared for him by Jesus. Bud's family is grateful to the staff of Paramount for the loving care he was given.

Bud is survived by his wife Thelma; sister Doris and brother Francis of Minnesota; two sons, Richard (Lynda) of Turlock, CA, Robert (Beryl) of Poulsbo, WA; grandchildren: Wesley of Cool, CA, Brent of Seattle, WA, Stephanie Leigh of San Diego, CA, Dan of Turlock, CA, and Brian of Philadelphia, PA; and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 20th, 2:00 p.m. at Connecting Point Church, 3200 E. Monte Vista Ave. in Denair, CA. Burial will be private.

We treasure the memories of his loving example of loyalty and devotion to family and to God. Remembrances may be sent to Connecting Point Church. Please leave memories and condolences at www.allenmortuary.com.
