Trio charged with attempted murder

Xavier Castillo

A feud that had been raging for several weeks reached a crescendo Sunday when one man was shot in what police are calling a planned set-up by a Turlock couple and a Denair teenager.

The victim, a 20-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to the lower left side of his torso, said Turlock Police Investigations Sgt. Russell Holeman. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The injury is not considered to be life-threatening, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Nino Amirfar.

Arrested for the shooting and charged with attempted murder and conspiracy are: Dakota Rogers, 20, of Turlock; Kailee Stewart, 24, of Turlock; and Xavier Castillo, 19, of Denair.

There had been a growing feud between the individuals revolving around past relationships, and on Sunday night the three suspects decided to set in motion a plan that ended in gunfire, Holeman said.

Holeman said a ruse was concocted to lure the victim to the 300 block of De Pauw Drive Sunday night. As the victim stood on the sidewalk a vehicle drove up and the passenger jumped out and fired at the victim, striking him once.

The shooter jumped back in the vehicle and it sped away.

The victim ran to a nearby residence for help and the police were contacted.

The victim was able to positively identify the driver of the vehicle and that led to the arrest of Rogers at his Aptos Drive home a few hours after the shooting.

Stewart came to the police department of her own accord and was taken into custody after being questioned by investigators, Holeman said.

Stewart and Rogers told investigators they are boyfriend and girlfriend, though their Facebook pages state they are married to each other.

Police had been searching for Castillo. He was taken into custody Monday morning when an investigator spotted him in the parking lot of a Wal-Green’s located near the shooting. Castillo tried to drive away, but was apprehended during a vehicle stop, Holeman said.

According to the police department, Castillo is a documented gang member.

Investigators suspect Rogers and Castillo were in the vehicle on De Pauw and carried out the shooting, while Stewart assisted with the planning.

The gun used in the shooting was a semi-automatic small caliber handgun. Holeman said the weapon was likely discarded somewhere in the neighborhood of the shooting.

Castillo and Rogers remain in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bail each.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Detective Justin Williamson at 664-7331.
