William H. Hayes

November 27, 1924 – August 27, 2011

William H. Hayes

POSTED September 2, 2011 11:20 p.m.

After a short illness, Bill Hayes breathed his last on August 27, 2011. He had a bowel obstruction that made it impossible for him to eat or drink. He was 86 years old.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances S. Hayes, and his daughter, Anne D. Hayes. Both live in Santa Cruz.

Like his father before him, Bill was a college professor. He taught philosophy and related courses for more than forty years, primarily at Washington State University and CSU Stanislaus. He had a full professional life and felt he had the best job in the world.

He lived a principled, but not a moralistic, life. He loved art, and architecture, and sharing fine meals with family and friends. He skied and sailed; he traveled the world. He read, he wrote, he taught, and he had good, deep talks with colleagues and friends. He was a kind and courteous man whose ready laugh will long be remembered.

Condolences and fond remembrances may be sent to Anne. Donations in Bill's name may be made to the charity of your choice.
