East Bay upsets Stanislaus

POSTED September 23, 2011 10:52 p.m.

A late goal by Ariana Gordon helped Cal State East Bay as the Pioneer surprised 13th ranked Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, at Pioneer Stadium on Friday.

The Warriors, just days after receiving the highest national ranking in program history, dominated on the attack but couldn't not get enough goals in the net. Cal State Stanislaus lost for the first time this season and fell to 4-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCAA.

Cal State East Bay runs its undefeated streak to two matches to improve to 3-3-1 and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Pioneers tied Humboldt State 2-2 last Sunday.

Despite out-shooting CSUEB 15-9 in the official books, the Warriors were stymied in front of the opposing net. East Bay goalkeeper Nina Cefalo picked up eight saves to keep the Warrior offense off the board - except for once.

With her third score of the season, Liz Scherrer even the score for the Warriors in the 73rd minute after CSUEB got on the board first. Eugenie Foote had given the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.

Cal State Stanislaus dominate at the attack in the second half, out-shooting CSUEB 10-5, but came up just short.

Gordon, who had assisted on the Foote goal, sent in the eventual game-winner at 82:18 to help CSUEB pull off the upset.

The Warriors are still in first place in the CCAA North, now tied with Sonoma State. Stanislaus takes on Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Seaside.
