Warriors’ return to Hayward a success

POSTED September 23, 2011 10:52 p.m.

The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors took care of business Friday night beating Cal State East Bay, 3-1.

Jose Velazquez, Carlos Gavino and Manny Avila all scored goals as the Warriors won their second straight conference match to improve to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Friday night's match marks the first time the men's soccer team returned to Pioneer Stadium since last Oct. 15 when the Warriors eventually had to settle for a 0-0 tie a few days after the match had ended 1-0 in favor of CSUS. Arturo Pulido had scored on a free kick with one second left to play after a foul call.

However, after a CSUEB appeal to the NCAA rules committee arguing that the time had expired when the foul was called, the result was changed to a scoreless tie.

Fast forward back to present day.

The 2011 Warriors went to work early on the attack, and, similar to the previous match, a first half dominance yielded no scoring. But it all changed in the second half when Velazquez got CSUS on the board. He dribbled past defenders and nailed a shot from 18 yards out at 50:35.

Less than four minutes later Juan Alvarez connected with Gavino for another score to give Stanislaus a 2-0 lead.

CSUEB (1-6, 0-5 CCAA) would get a goal in the 63rd minute on a score by Miguel Padilla, but the Warriors had the final word. Avila scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute for the final count.

Starting goalkeeper Bill Hambelton only saw five shots with four on goal. He picked up three saves. The Warriors out-shot the Pioneers 14-5 with eight on goal. Stanislaus also had the advantage in corner kicks 9-2.

Cal State Stanislaus' next opponent is Cal State Monterey Bay. The match is on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Seaside. CSUMB upset Chico State, 2-1, on Friday. Chico State is No. 4 in the West Region. The Wildcats were ranked No. 14 less than two weeks ago.
