Argument mars day of fishing; one jailed

POSTED September 11, 2009 10:35 p.m.
A fishing expedition among three friends at the back of Lake Yosemite Wednesday night took a turn for the worst when one man started an argument over cigarettes.
According to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department, Adison Burroughs, 31, of Merced was the instigator of the argument and he was booked into the Merced County Jail on a charge of felony vandalism.
The sheriff’s department said Burroughs, who was intoxicated, kept asking to “bum” a cigarette off one of the guys he was fishing with. When the 25-year-old victim ran out of cigarettes, and Burroughs kept asking, an argument ensued, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
During the argument, Burroughs allegedly pulled a four-inch “Buck” knife and held it to his side.
“The victim told him to either ‘use it or put it away,’’ MacKenzie said.
Burroughs walked back to his truck and the two other men went back to fishing, MacKenzie said. Then they heard Burroughs’ truck fire up, his tires squealing and a loud bang. When they went back to their vehicle, they saw Burroughs ram his truck into their car and push it into the gate. Burroughs then left the area, MacKenzie said.
Deputy Dylan Buessing responded to Burroughs’ house and saw the truck in his driveway. The damage on his vehicle was consistent with the damage on the victim’s vehicle and Buessing had the truck towed as evidence in the crime. That’s when Burroughs opened the door and began yelling and cussing at the deputy, MacKenzie said.
Burroughs refused to leave his house and even attempted to call the Merced Police Department to report the towed vehicle as stolen. He eventually came out of his house and was taken into custody for felony vandalism and brandishing a knife.
The knife described by the victim was found in Burroughs’ truck, MacKenzie said.
