CSU tallies most ever applications

POSTED December 9, 2011 11:07 p.m.

For the third consecutive year, the California State University system has received a record number of undergraduate applications.

A total 665,860 applications were submitted by 258,834 potential first-time freshmen, well above last year’s mark of 241,166 distinct applicants. Due to severe state budget cuts, the CSU expects to turn away as many as 20,000 qualified potential students from that pool of applicants.

Also new this year: for the first time, Latino applicants outnumbered white applicants, 33.3 percent to 31.2 percent, per self-reported demographic information.

The priority application period for the CSU system closed Nov. 30, but seven campuses are still accepting new undergraduate applications: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Stanislaus, Humboldt and the California Maritime Academy. Each campus has different deadlines and some only offer enrollment in certain programs; CSU Stanislaus applications will remain open until Dec. 15.

All CSU campuses are continuing to accept graduate applications, as well as Doctor of Nursing Practice program applications.
