Denair High’s girls basketball team had an easy time defeating Waterford High Tuesday night. The Coyotes finished 49-22, securing the win in their first league game.

The Coyotes (3-7) and Wildcats (3-11) met less than a month ago in a close game that was decided by three points. Denair hit the court determined to come away with a more convincing win and did so with an impressive offensive performance. In the first half alone the Coyotes hit seven 3-point shots. Chelsea Wooten led the charge with three first quarter 3-pointers and 16 overall points.

“The girls were ready to play,” Denair’s head coach Daniel Rodriguez said. “They wanted to prove themselves.”

Denair’s offensive fireworks were aided by Waterford’s inability to make a basket. The Wildcats missed more than half of their attempted shots and were unable to stop Denair’s rebound game. At halftime the Coyotes led 33-7.

The game slowed down in the second half as Denair, comfortable with its lead, took the foot off the gas. Still, the Wildcats were unable to overcome the Coyotes’ huge lead from the first half.

Denair will now face Mariposa Thursday night where they expect a competitive matchup.

“It should be a tough one,” Rodriguez said. “But these girls want to keep on winning.”
