Debt motive for kidnap

POSTED January 20, 2012 7:25 p.m.

A Turlock man was kidnapped and briefly held hostage as his captor tried to extort money from him, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The victim, an 18-year-old man, was walking in the 1400 block of S. First Street around 3 p.m. Wednesday when he was confronted by three Hispanic men.

One suspect, identified by the police department as Anthony Leyva, 21, was allegedly owed money by the victim and threatened him with a gun.

The victim was ordered into the suspect’s vehicle and was driven to the Wells Fargo Bank at 440 E. Olive Ave.

The victim was told to go inside the bank and withdraw money. Inside the bank the 18-year-old told a bank employee he was being forced to make the withdrawal for the suspects waiting outside.

The bank contacted the police department and officers were able to take the three into custody without incident.

A realistic, albeit fake, revolver was found in the vehicle, according to the police department.

As the investigation progressed two of the men in custody were released without charges. Leyva was booked into the Stanislaus Count y Jail on a charge of kidnapping.
