Teens found guilty of gang crimes

POSTED September 25, 2009 11:45 p.m.
Two Modesto teenagers were sentenced to state prison for their roles in a gang fight that left one woman with a gunshot wound.
Amonte Jones, 17, and Kraig Palacio, 17, were sentenced to seven years in state prison by Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Timothy Salter after being convicted on Sept. 15 of assault with a firearm with an enhancement that the shooting was committed for the benefit of the Norteno criminal street gang.
On Jan. 30, Jones and Palacio were involved in a gang-related fist fight with others in the presence of multiple witnesses. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office said that towards the end of the fight, Jones retrieved a sawed off shotgun and handed it to Palacio, who fired at the retreating victims. One female victim received non-life threatening shotgun wounds.
Jones and Palacio are Norteno gang members, according to the district attorney’s office. They were prosecuted as adults because of the seriousness of the crimes charged.
