Warrior women drop final two games to Vulcans

POSTED February 14, 2012 8:33 p.m.

In the final two games of the six-game series, host Hawaii Hilo was not very hospitable to the Warriors as Cal State Stanislaus lost both games on Friday, 9-1 and 6-2.
The Vulcans jumped out on top with four runs in each of the first two innings en route to the five-inning mercy rule win in game one. In the series finale, Hawaii Hilo again scored early and held on to win 6-2.
For the Warriors, it was a rough day in the circle against the Hilo (5-1) offense. Starter Brittani Weatherford was chased after 1 2/3 innings after giving up eight runs on six hits. However, only three runs were earned. A passed ball and a throwing error helped UHH scored eight runs in the first two innings on six hits.
In the nightcap, Natalie Rendon gave up five runs on four hits in the first inning before Kristan Burns took over in the second inning. Burns fared better as she tossed five innings, gave up just one run on five hits with one strike out.
The Warriors managed one hit in the first game, a Jordan Flora single in the fourth after a Brieanna Stone leadoff walk. Stone eventually came around to score on a fielding error by the UHH third baseman.
Vanessa Del Toro led the Warriors in game two with two doubles while two other Warriors - Flora and Weatherford - each also had two hits. Rachel Borges drove in two runs, one with a single in the fourth and a sac fly in the fifth.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 4-9, won't have much of a break after returning from Hawaii this weekend. The Warriors will have to prepare for their California Collegiate Athletic Association opener slated for this weekend. They face defending national champion UC San Diego in La Jolla Friday and Saturday.
