TC claims Southern Crown again

Denair readies for playoffs

POSTED February 18, 2012 12:09 a.m.

The lady Eagles of Turlock Christian High earned their third consecutive Southern Conference title with Thursday's 76-31 victory over Waterford High. TC once again hit the court without Halie Bergman but the trio of Rebekah Muller (22 points), Natalie Snyder (22 points), and Marly Burton (15 points) stepped up to help the Eagles close out conference play decidedly. Muller and Burton also controlled the boards on defense, recording fifteen and fourteen rebounds respectively.
TC shares the Southern Conference title with rival Ripon Christian High who handed the Eagles their first league loss last week. TC is projected to enter the playoffs at the number two seed and face either Central Catholic High or Vacaville Christian High in its fifth consecutive post season appearance. Bergman is said to be on the road to recovery in time for the game.
In its final game of the season Denair High beat Delhi High 50-24 to finish fourth in the Southern Conference standings.
The Coyotes' (8-6 Southern) offense was led by Chelsea Wooten (17 points) and Courtney Gomes (11 points) as they outscored the Hawks (4-10 Southern) in each quarter. Wooten and Gomes also led Denair's defense with ten rebounds and five steals respectively. Delhi's shooters were all kept to single digit scoring efforts in the team's second straight loss.
Denair's season got off to a rocky start with the Coyotes dropping six of their eight preseason games. Denair fared better in conference play but were unable to overcome Turlock Christian, Ripon Christian High or Mariposa County High. Still, the Coyotes will continue their season when playoffs start next week. This season marked the first time the Coyotes finished with a conference record above .500 and made it to the playoffs in nine years.
