Turlock suspect killed in home invasion attempt

POSTED February 21, 2012 11:10 p.m.

One Turlock man is dead and another behind bars from a botched home invasion robbery reported in rural Illinois.
According to the LaSalle County Sheriff's Department in Illinois, Marcus E. Samarripa, 24, of Turlock and Raymond Maldonado, 22, of Turlock, broke into a home Sunday night in the outskirts of Earlville, Ill., and Maldonado was shot by the homeowner.
The sheriff's department said Maldonado was armed with a pistol when the two men forced their way into the home.
The two men were confronted by the homeowner, identified as Jose Contreras, 47, who was armed with his own firearm.
Contreras fired two shots, striking Maldonado both times, the sheriff's department reported. Samarripa fled from the home uninjured in a small dark-colored vehicle.
The authorities were notified about the break-in and the shooting shortly around 3 a.m. Maldonado was rushed to the emergency room at Mendota Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A description of Samarripa and the vehicle he fled in was issued to law enforcement in the area and he was apprehended a short time later.
As the investigation progressed authorities discovered an estimated 35 marijuana plants growing in Contreras' basement.
Samarripa has been charged with a felony count of home invasion robbery and Contreras was taken into custody for a felony charge of growing marijuana.
According to the LaSalle County State Attorney's Office, both Samarripa and Contreras could face murder charges because Maldonado's death occurred during the commission of a felony.
Samarripa remains in custody on a $1 million bail.
Contreras posted bail, but authorities have put a hold on his release because of his immigration status.
