Local Irish pub rock band The Van Diemen’s has been looking forward to St. Patrick’s Day for awhile. This holiday, which has everyone seeing green, is their day to shine.

The Van Diemen’s will be performing at two venues this year — Wellington’s Pub and Restaurant in Turlock and Lucky Fest in downtown Modesto, both shows are tonight.

“It’s gonna be a little crazy, a drunk fest, but definitely (exciting),” said front man Darrell McIntyre.

The band plays fresh renditions of traditional Irish songs, as well as covers from bands like Dropkick Murphys.

McIntyre and his wife, Yvette, formed the band five years ago after playing a St. Patrick’s Day party for fun. They enjoyed it so much they chose to pursue it further.

Members Darrell and Yvette McIntyre and “Dr. Blue” recently added a step dancer, Marilyn, who dances on a wooden board to the songs, keeping the beat with her feet.

The Van Diemen’s Band has played annual breast cancer awareness shows at Wellington’s, in addition to bars and cafés all over Turlock.

“By far, Wellington’s is my favorite venue to play,” said Darrell McIntyre.

He said the whole band is looking forward to starting out their St. Patrick’s Day shows in Turlock before heading to their late night performance at the Patty Pub during Modesto’s Lucky Fest.

“I don’t plan on touring the world or anything; we’re just a band who wants to have fun,” said McIntyre of the band’s future plans.

The band does hope to one day get an opportunity to perform in the Modesto Area Music Awards.

The Van Diemen’s will perform from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wellington’s, located at 10 E. Main St.; and then at 10 p.m. in Paddy’s Pub at Lucky Fest, located on 11th Street between K and L streets in downtown Modesto. Tickets are $20 at the entrance.
