Merced pursuit ends with suicide

POSTED October 2, 2009 11:21 p.m.
A pursuit of a man involved in a domestic dispute came to an abrupt end Thursday morning when the subject of the pursuit took his own life, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The man, who was not identified, shot himself in the head while driving, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address on Lobo in the Beachwood area of Merced for a domestic dispute. While en route to the call, a deputy passed the male half of the dispute driving eastbound on Lopes Avenue.
“The deputy tried to initiate a vehicle stop, when the driver and sole occupant suffered what we believe was a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head,” said MacKenzie.
The vehicle crashed through two fences and a backyard before striking a tree at W and 9th streets.
Undersheriff Bill Blake was the second person on scene and attempted to render first aid to the driver, MacKenzie said. The man was transported to the hospital where he was declared dead.
The case is still under investigation.
