Parolee found with drugs, gun

POSTED October 2, 2009 11:22 p.m.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Department arrested a parolee on Tuesday after he was found in possession of a large amount of marijuana and a stolen handgun.
Silvano Perez, 47, was taken into custody Tuesday night after deputies turned up information that he was staying at a trailer in the 100 block of Broadway in Atwater.
Investigators found approximately four to five pounds of marijuana and a stolen Glock pistol in the room Perez was staying in, sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie said.
The pistol, that was stolen out of Tulare County, was under some clothing on the bed, easily accessible by Perez, MacKenzie said.
Half the marijuana had been packaged and the other half was hanging in a closet drying out, MacKenzie said. Another half pound of marijuana was found by some scales in the kitchen.
Perez was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon and had been considered a parolee at large for the last several months. He was booked into Merced Jail on possession and possession for sale of marijuana, possession of stolen property and illegal possession of a firearm and remains without bail.
