Fire department investigates cause of blaze

POSTED March 30, 2012 7:10 p.m.

A fire of suspicious origin burned through a vacant Turlock home Tuesday night.

The fire at 117 S. Tully Rd. remains under investigation because the point of origin is undetermined and “listed as suspicious,” according to the Turlock Fire Department.

The report of the blaze came in around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by a gas station attendant at the nearby Circle K store.

The house had exposed walls and beams that the fire raced through; leaving only the charred framing still standing once the fire was brought under control.

Embers from the rapidly moving fire caused damage to the roof of the neighboring Circle K store and the fence that separate the two structures.

The home was vacant, but was known to house homeless individuals, who used it for “warming fires and staying out of the weather,” according to the fire department.

The damage was estimated at $50,000.

Fourteen fire fighters responded to the incident and it took approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.
