Warriors win first league match up

POSTED October 6, 2009 11:13 p.m.
The day couldn’t come soon enough. Heading into Friday’s match at Humboldt State, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team had the tough thought of being winless in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. But there was more.
The Warriors had arrived too early — actually, three hours in advance, despite both teams going in thinking the match was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Nonetheless, the Stanislaus players overcame this sudden rush of adversity and swept Humboldt State 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 to capture their first league win of the season.
“I am really proud of this group,” said Stanislaus coach Christina Lore, whose team snapped a three-match skid to improve to 7-9 overall and 1-7 in league play. “They didn’t let today’s confusion bother them and came out ready to play. They really stepped up tonight in a tough place to play.”
One particular player who really stepped up was sophomore outside hitter Lianne Vicchio, who tied her season-high 16 kills to lead the charge. She got help from freshmen middle hitters Melissa Bishop (11 kills) and Andrea Fett (seven blocks), while junior setter Nicki Brown made her second straight start and had 34 assists.
Vicchio, Megan Britton and Amanda Pielstick each finished with nine digs.
The Warriors will have opportunities to win some more league matches, as they host Chico State today, Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
