Delhi’s Jenise Naranjo will be competing for scholarship funds on Saturday in the 2012 Teen Pageant in Sacramento.

This will be the Delhi High School junior’s first experience with pageants.

“I think it’s a great new experience for me,” she said.

Naranjo, the daughter of Joe and Cora Naranjo, is a cheerleader at Delhi High and part of the Regional Occupational Program. Through ROP she spends two hours every school day working at Emanuel Medical Center on the medical floor.

After high school, Naranjo plans on enrolling in the nursing program at California State University, Stanislaus. The junior holds a 3.7 GPA and currently takes college level courses in Spanish through Merced College.

“I like helping others,” she said. “It just feels good to be there for them.”

Naranjo said she is not nervous about performing in the pageant because she used to dance and do gymnastics.

The 2012 Teen Pageant includes a personal interview with the judges, and then two fashion categories — casual wear and formal wear. The casual wear portion of the competition is supposed to show “who you are,” said Naranjo, who plans on wearing scrubs and a stethoscope to represent her work in the medical field.

During the formal wear competition, each contestant will complete a modeling routine that was taught in previous pageant training sessions. Naranjo plans to wear a white princess dress for the formal wear section.
