Former Bulldogs become hall of famers

POSTED June 12, 2012 9:58 p.m.

Turlockers Paul Larson and Dave Maggard were recently inducted into the California Interscholastic Federation’s Sac-Joaquin Section 2012 Hall of Fame class for their athletic accomplishments at Turlock High and beyond. Both were three-sport standouts, representing the Bulldogs on the football field, basketball court and track.

While at Turlock, Larson earned a 1947 SJS section championship in the 880-yard dash and was named the Cal Hi Sports state football player of the year in 1949, becoming one of only six players from the district to receive the honor. After high school, Larson played quarterback for the University of California where he led the country in all purpose yards in 1953 and passing yards in 1954. He was also a defensive back and is third on Cal’s career interception list with 12. After finishing fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, Larson was drafted in the 8th round by the Chicago Cardinals in 1954 and joined the Oakland Raiders in 1960. Larson is currently a charter member of the Turlock High School Hall of Fame.

Maggard’s athletic success also began with track while at Turlock. In 1957 he won the SJS section championship in the shot put and finished fifth overall in state later that year. Maggard also attended the University of California where he is considered one of the top track and field athletes in the school’s history. He held Cal’s shot put record for 19 years and placed among the top five shot putters in the NCAA twice. After college, Maggard placed first in the 1968 Olympic trials for the shot put and later placed fifth at Mexico City. He went on to become the coach for Cal’s track team as well as its athletic director before being named managing director of sports for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Maggard is currently a second class member of the Turlock High School Hall of Fame.
