Bakers sought for apple pie contest

The 10th Annual Apple Pie Contest will be held on July 13 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.

Summer can be sweet — especially when there’s pie involved. A local tradition is coming up soon — the annual Apple Pie Contest.

This contest asks bakers of all ages and skill levels to create their best apple pie and submit it for judging. Along with the thrill of competition, bakers also get to give to those in need. Each contestant must submit two pies — one for judging and one that will be donated to the United Samaritan Foundation’s lunch program.

“The goal of it is to pass along a whole lot of pies. Hopefully, we can get a lot of people to participate because it benefits people standing in line at a lunch truck,” said the contest’s sponsor, Dave Dubyak of Dubyak Chiropractic.

The contest is open to all local bakers and service groups. Each entrant must register in advance at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. There is no entry fee. Judging will take place on the opening day of the fair, July 13.

This year the judging panel will be made up of mayors from cities around the county. First prize is $100, and the baker of the second place pie will receive $50.

This will be the 10th year for the apple pie contest at the Stanislaus County Fair. There are no restrictions on what ingredients can go into the pies — except, of course, there has to be apples.

“The caliber of pies is incredible,” said Dubyak. “The first year the guy who won called it the mile high apple pie, it had to be six inches above the pan. He cut it into pizza slices.”
