The 10 –year-old Turlock American All-Stars began their journey through the California Section 6 All-Star Tournament with a 9-1 victory over Amador County West on Saturday and followed it up with a 14-0 bruising of Delta on Monday. After escaping the losers’ bracket, Delta fought their way back into the championship game against Turlock American on Tuesday, where they redeemed themselves with a bruising of their own, winning 10-7.

Delta jumped onto the board in the first inning, taking advantage of a Turlock error for the 1-0 lead. Delta added three more runs in the second inning off a three-run triple with two outs as Turlock American pitcher Andy Owen struggled to find his rhythm.

“We came out a little flat and we struggled to find the strike zone early,” Turlock American head coach Leon Curtis said.

Delta’s pitcher, Eric Evans, had no trouble keeping Turlock’s batters off balance. The strong-armed Evans recorded seven strike outs through three innings and kept Turlock American off the board. Evans contributed on offense in the top of the fourth inning, hitting a two-run home run over the center field fence which was followed by an Adam Thomas solo home run to extend Delta’s lead to 7-0.

Turlock finally struck in the fourth inning, scoring three runs, and then rallied in the fifth with five runs. The effort was too little too late, however, as Delta scored three more runs before the end of the game to take the win, 10-7.

The two teams will play again today at 7 p.m. at Julien Field to determine who will walk away as champions.

“We’re hoping Matt Livingston can shut them down like he did on Monday,” Curtis said. “We know we can score runs but we need to pitch the ball better if we’re going to win.”
