12-year-old National All-Stars take District 6 Tournament

Turlock National All-Stars Section 6 champions

Tuesday marked the second time in three days that the Turlock National All-Stars and the Hoover Tyler All-Stars met face to face on a baseball diamond. After falling to Turlock in the semi-finals of the Section 6 All-Star Tournament, 4-3, Hoover Tyler battled through the losers’ bracket and found themselves in the championship game. The two teams once again engaged in close competition — but in the end Turlock claimed the District 6 crown with another one-run win. The final score was 7-6.

“They are a darn good ball club, from the top of the line to the bottom of the line,” National head coach John Garcia said of Hoover Tyler. “They’re very similar to the Turlock American All-Stars.”

Hoover Tyler jumped out to a three point lead after three innings, scoring three runs in both the second and third inning. Although Hoover Tyler’s offense rolled early, Bobby Martinez’ presence on the hill turned the tide for Turlock in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martinez, who finished with six strikeouts and 60 pitches, shutout Hoover Tyler in the final three innings, destroying their momentum and boosting his team’s confidence.

“This team is not one to buckle under pressure,” Garcia said. “They seem to be having fun at all times, which is unique for a group of 12-year olds.”

Down 5-6 headed into the sixth and final inning, Turlock exhibited their penchant for fun with a Brandon Pacheco two-run home run to win the game in dramatic fashion. The Turlock National All-Stars hope to continue their streak of success Saturday in Fremont where they will take part in the Northern California State Divisions Tournament.

“This team refuses to give in,” Garcia said. “We’re going to have some fun.”
