Battery conviction for attack on blind teen

POSTED October 19, 2009 3:14 p.m.
A Modesto woman was sentenced to 74 days in jail for attacking a blind 19-year-old woman.
Anne Van Praag, 55, of Modesto was found guilty after a three day jury trial of battery and resisting arrest.
According to the Stanislaus District Attorney’s Office, on Dec. 14, 2008, Van Praag attacked her blind 19-year-old lodger as he sat in his  room listening to his iPod. Van Praag hit and scratched the lodger and pulled his hair.
Officers  from the Modesto Police Department went to Van Praag’s home to investigate the crime and after Van Praag was placed under arrest for battery, she ran from the officers. Van Praag threw herself to the ground and refused to stand up despite the officers’ repeated requests, according to the district attorney’s office. Officers  were eventually forced to assist Van Praag to her feet.
Upon accepting the guilty verdicts, Judge Ricardo Cordova placed Van Praag on three years’ informal probation, ordered her to pay specified fines and restitution, serve 50 hours community service, attend anger management classes, and sentenced her to 74 days in the county jail.
