Smashed pears result of train versus truck collision

POSTED July 26, 2012 5:09 p.m.

A semi-truck was struck by a freight train Wednesday afternoon in Turlock, leaving a debris field of truck parts and smashed pears all over the road.

There were no injuries reported in the accident.

The driver of the semi-truck, whose name was not released by the California Highway Patrol, was attempting to cross the railroad tracks at S. Golden State Boulevard and S. Daubenberger Road when his truck got stuck on the tracks. It’s unknown if the truck’s mechanics failed or if the trailer bottomed out on the tracks.

“The driver saw the train coming and jumped out,” CHP spokesman Officer Eric Parsons said.

The Union Pacific freight train hit the truck at an approximate speed of 50 mph, Parsons said.

The impact caused minor damage to the train, major damage to the truck and sent crates and crates of pears scattering across the road and the railroad tracks.
