Merced fair announces slogan winner, opens logo contest

POSTED August 20, 2012 5:58 p.m.

Sometimes a simple “Thank You” says it all.

That’s what Jeanette Muratore exclaimed when she found out her entry in the 2013 Merced County Fair’s slogan contest was the first place winner. “Thank You Veterans” was selected from 138 entries by the fair’s Board of Directors. The theme for the 122nd fair is Veterans of our Armed Forces.

“Being a veteran, I am pleased the fair is honoring those who served,” said Muratore, who lives in Merced. A registered nurse, she was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force and served from 1966-68. Her husband, Lt. Col. Frank Muratore, served in the Air Force for 22 years, and their son, Lt. Col. John Muratore, also served for two decades.

Jeanette Muratore will receive $100 for her winning slogan and a pair of season passes to the fair, June 12-16, 2013.

The contest’s second place winner was “Honor Veterans Past & Present,” submitted by Cheryl Meyer of Merced. The third place entry, “A Tribute to Veterans,” was submitted by Pam Boesch of Atwater. The second and third place winners will each receive a pair of season passes to the fair.

Now that the 2013 fair has a slogan, the next step is to launch the annual contest to find the right graphic design to go with it. This year, for the first time, the contest also invites photo illustrations, in addition to graphic design entries. The creator of the winning logo design or photo illustration will be awarded a $500 prize and season passes to the fair. The deadline to turn in entries is Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

The winning artwork will be used on posters, ads, postcards, schedules, T-shirts, the fair’s website, Facebook and more. The competition is open to Merced County residents only.

“We are looking for the best photo illustration or graphic design that will say ‘Thank You Veterans,’ ” said Tom Musser, the fair’s CEO. “We want to see entries that show honor and respect for our veterans, but also celebrate our men and women who have served in uniform to show them our appreciation. That’s what the 2013 Fair will be about.”

To enter the contest, graphic artists may use any medium and submit a maximum of three entries on 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper. For photo illustrations, submit a maximum of three 8 1/2 by 11-inch prints. For photo illustrations, photos must be high resolution (300 dpi or better). If a photo illustration is selected as the contest winner, high resolution digital files must be provided to the fair.

All entries become the Merced County Fair’s property and won’t be returned to the artist. The winning entry may be altered for marketing purposes.

Entries may be submitted to the fairgrounds office, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way or mailed to the Merced County Fair, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Merced CA 95341. Submissions should include the entrants’ name, address and phone number and a copy of the following statement with your signature: “The logo entry (entries) are the artist’s own original, artistic creation and intellectual property.”

Any photo of a recognizable, living person must be accompanied by a photo release form signed by that person. No copyrighted photos will be accepted — photos must be either owned by the entrant or the photo must be in the public domain —  such as a U.S. National Archives photo — and entrants may be required to provide proof.

The fair’s Board of Directors will select the first, second and third place graphic design and/or photo illustration winners at their October 8 board meeting. All eligible entries will be assigned a number for judging. The numbered entries will be reviewed by the fair’s marketing/promotions committee before the winning entries are selected by the fair board. The entrants’ names won’t be revealed until after the winners are picked. The second and third place winners will each receive a pair of season passes to the fair.

Information on the contest will be available at www.MercedCountyFair.com For more information, call the fair office at 722-1507.
