History of business: A downtown, Main Street mainstay for 30 years, Camara’s Clothier has long been one of Turlock’s go-to stores for men’s clothing.

The business got its start when owner Joe Camara decided to move his family from the Bay Area to Turlock, so he could raise his children in a smaller town. Unable to find a job locally, Camara parlayed his past experience in menswear into opening his own store selling men’s clothing.

Located in the heart of the then-bustling downtown business district, the store was an instant hit. As big-box retailers gradually opened across town and the center of Turlock’s retail shifted, Camara’s has remained busy thanks to loyal, longtime customers.

“I’ve married couples, and I’ve married their offspring,” Camara said.

Business specialty: Camera’s carries a full range of menswear, from dress to casual, and offers tuxedo rentals for special occasions.

But Camara’s true specialty is finding properly fitting clothing for each customer, be they regular, big, or tall.

“I’m very particular about the fit of a garment,” Camara said.

Camara said he’s oftentimes talked customers out of a purchase, just because the item did not fit correctly. It’s that dedication to fit, Camara said, that keeps customers coming back.

Camara’s also offers in-house alterations, ensuring every piece is perfectly tailored.
