Pitman bounces back with big win over Atwater

POSTED October 12, 2012 11:07 p.m.

After an uncharacteristically low offensive performance against Buhach Colony High last week, Pitman High turned the page with a four touchdown effort in its 28-20 win over Atwater High on Friday.

“Even if we had beaten Buhach, this was a huge win because Atwater’s a very good team,” Pitman’s head coach Brandon Harris said.

Pitman recorded its first Central California Conference win by scoring a touchdown in each quarter. Brent Nelle was the first to find paydirt on a 13 yard run in the first quarter while Kody Brackett provided the second score of the night with a two yard, second quarter touchdown.

Atwater’s defense began to key in on the Pride’s tailbacks in the second half, prompting quarterback Wyatt Clapper to find points through the air. Clapper connected with Brennan Hauser for two second half touchdowns, the first from 39 yards out and the second from 44 yards. Clapper ended the night with more than 200 passing yards.

“We tried to mix it up,” Harris said. “They tried to take away the run so we had to take what they gave us.”

There was a moment of uncertainty after Pitman’s final touchdown when the Falcons took the subsequent kickoff to the house but the Pride (1-1 CCC) were able to maintain control through regulation and hold on for the win.

Pitman hosts Merced High next Friday in what is sure to be another competitive matchup.

“There are no easy games in our league,” Harris said.
