County expects high turnout for Tuesday's election

POSTED November 2, 2012 9:22 p.m.

Election Day is now just days away.

On Tuesday, voters across the country will elect a U.S. President. Locally, voters will also decide a Turlock City Council election, numerous ballot initiatives, and state and federal representatives.

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A polling site locator can be found at www.stanvote.com. Results will be made available at www.stanvote.com as they are tabulated; the first figures will likely be posted at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Those voting by mail must have their ballots reach the Stanislaus County Clerk Recorder & Registrar of Voters’ office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Post marks do not count.

Vote-by-mail voters may instead drop off their ballots at any polling place on the day of the election.

Counting will continue for several days after Tuesday’s election, with 10,000 to 30,000 ballots expected to go uncounted until Wednesday or later. Vote by mail ballots turned in at polling locations, provisional ballots, and write-in ballots cannot be counted on election night, and will be tallied during the official election audit which will be completed within 28 days of the election date.

Voters can confidentially check to see if their ballots were received by visiting www.stanvote.com, then clicking on “My Ballot Status.”

As of Nov. 1, 60,320 ballots had already been returned to the Stanislaus County Elections Office, out of 136,556 total vote-by-mail ballots issued.

In the last Presidential Election, Nov. 4, 2008, 70.79 percent of 230,163 registered Stanislaus County cast ballots. Turnout in the county has been over 64 percent for presidential elections since at least 1996.

Today, 232,885 voters are registered in Stanislaus County. Democrats comprise the plurality, totaling 93,338, with 90,730 Republicans registered.  Nearly 37,500 voters do not state a party preference, while the remainder is registered to a third party.
