Tipsy Tows ensure safe Halloween

POSTED October 31, 2009 12:13 a.m.
The ghouls and ghosts out and about this Halloween may be spooky, but drinking and driving can be deadly. Fortunately for those who imbibe a bit too much this evening, AAA Northern California is continuing their longstanding Halloween Tipsy Tow service this year.
Any driver who kicks back a few too many tonight, regardless of whether or not they are a AAA member, can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a complementary tow home of up to five miles. The driver and vehicle will receive a one-way ride to the driver’s home, and passengers can come along as long as the tow truck has enough room.
“Everybody wants to enjoy their costume parties this Halloween weekend,” said Matt Skryja, spokesperson for AAA Northern California. “But if you’ve been drinking, don’t be a joker and get behind the wheel. Instead, be a super hero and give AAA a call. We’ll make sure you get home safely.”
Tipsy Tows are available from 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Sunday. Reservations cannot be made for the service.
While there may be a bit of a wait for a tow truck given demand, a small time spent waiting is far better than a first time DUI conviction, which can cost up to $12,000 according to AAA statistics. Death, AAA notes, cannot have a price tag attached.
Last Halloween 647 drivers in California were arrested for DUI, while 171 alcohol related crashes occurred, per California Department of Justice and California Highway Patrol statistics. Six died, while 95 were injured. The CHP expects more accidents this year, as Halloween falls on a weekend night.
To obtain a free Tipsy Tow, call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) between the hours of 6 p.m. today and 6 a.m. Sunday and tell the AAA operator, “I need a Tipsy Tow.” Anyone can call for the service, regardless of AAA affiliation, and friends or acquaintances can call to secure a Tipsy Tow for an inebriated driver.
