Bike Works owner shares passion for BMX

Matt Nascimento opened Bike Works in 2008 to bring a better selection of bikes — especially BMX bikes — to the Turlock area.

One man’s lifelong love for bicycles has led to a Best of Turlock-winning business.

Bike Works has been named Readers' Choice for Bike Shop in Turlock for 2012, the first time the business has claimed the award.

But becoming Best in Turlock almost seemed fated for owner Matt Nascimento, a man for whom bikes aren’t just a business – they’re a way of life.

Nascimento grew up riding BMX bikes. Then, when some kids would go off to university, he worked at other area bike shops – a time period he describes as his own sort of college education.

It was there that he saw an untapped niche market, the realm of BMX bikes, the sort Nascimento himself liked to ride.

“I felt like there was a big hole in the area,” Nascimento said.

Nascimento wanted to bring a better selection of bike parts to Turlock, particularly for BMX riding, and higher quality BMX bikes.

Bike Works first opened on Black Friday 2008, at the start of a worldwide economic meltdown. In 2010, the store moved from Center Street to 311 East Main St., where the business has flourished into the city’s best-voted bike shop.

Today, the store is always hopping with shoppers and bike enthusiasts alike.

“We always wanted a place where we could hang out and not be yelled at,” Nascimento said.

The joy on Nascimento’s own face is unmistakable as he shows off his wares. As an order of new parts arrives, he can’t wait to dig in to it, putting an interview on hold to talk about spiffy new wheel hubs with patrons.

“This is it,” Nascimento said. “Every one of these kids loves this store.”

But it’s all about the product, Nascimento said – good quality bicycles, tailored to the demands of the Turlock marketplace.

Bike Works was the first to bring Fit Bike Co. BMX bikes to the area, a brand respected by BMX riders across the world. Carrying those bikes has put Bike Works on the map, Nascimento said, drawing customers from across the Valley.

And for adults in search of an easy-riding, comfortable ride, Bike Works offers a full line of Giant bicycles – a brand Nascimento correlates with the Ford or GM of the bicycle world.

For those interested in customizing their bikes, Bike Works offers a full range of goods that can usually only be obtained through mail-order, but at a comparable price to online shopping.

It’s not easy to operate a brick and mortar specialty store with the Internet as a constant competitor, Nascimento said. It’s only because of the support of Turlockers, both buying his goods and voting his business the Readers' Choice, that Bike Works is where it is today.

“If it wasn’t for the community, I wouldn’t be here,” Nascimento said.
