Fire ruled accidental

POSTED January 25, 2013 7:26 p.m.

A follow-up investigation by the Turlock Fire Department into a fire at a Turlock apartment has concluded the fire was accidental in nature.

The fire at 3420 Rochester Court was originally believed to have started by a burning log rolling out of a fireplace, but a follow-up investigation by the fire marshal revealed the fire originated at the bottom of a fire box under the living room floor of the second story apartment.

“The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined and accidental in nature,” the fire department reported.

The fire was reported Monday morning and was first noticed by a downstairs neighbor who saw the smoke. The neighbor alerted the female resident, who was able to get out of the apartment unharmed.

There were no working fire alarms at the residence, according to the fire department.

The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes and crews spent an additional two hours checking for fire extension into the attic, chimney and crawl space, according to the fire department. Three engine companies and 10 personnel responded to the scene.

The fire caused moderate damage to the upstairs apartment and the estimated dollar loss to the structure and contents was put at $7,500.
