City makes Kaepernick Day official

POSTED January 30, 2013 3:00 p.m.

The City of Turlock has released an official proclamation declaring Saturday and Sunday “Go Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers Weekend” in honor of their Super Bowl run.

“On behalf of the Turlock City Council, (I) do hereby encourage all citizens in our community to celebrate the outstanding achievements of San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who, in distinguishing himself has brought great honor and credit to his family, his friends, and his city,” Mayor John Lazar wrote in the proclamation.

The proclamation issued by the city honors Kaepernick’s athletic abilities as well as his spirit.

“In addition to demonstrating a great deal of natural athletic ability, an outstanding spirit of dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work, Colin Kaepernick possessed and exhibited equally important qualities such as teamwork, respect, and leadership,” the proclamation reads.

The proclamation will be read at the Turlock Believes tailgate party at Pitman High School set for Saturday. The tailgate will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The tailgate, sponsored by the non-profit Turlock Education Foundation is free to the public.

The event will offer food and product vendors, as well as opportunities for fans of all ages to participate in fun activities, take pictures, record videos and send notes of encouragement to Kaepernick. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own BBQs to tailgate. As the event will occur on school property no propane, alcohol or tobacco will be permitted at the event.

“We’re thrilled to see our very own in the Super Bowl,” said Turlock Education Foundation President Barney Gordon. “Not only is Kaepernick a role model for our youth, but he has renewed Turlock’s sense of pride in our community. We’re excited to see him play a big part in bringing home the Niners' sixth Super Bowl win.”
