Affordable housing, budget on docket for City Council

POSTED February 22, 2013 10:34 p.m.

The Turlock City Council will consider approving a loan Tuesday night to purchase a four-plex for the use of affordable housing.

The loan of $270, 025 between the city and Stanislaus County Affordable Housing Corporation would be used to cover the purchase and closing costs of a four-plex at 1060 Alpha Street.

Stanislaus County Affordable Housing Corporation promotes construction and development of affordable housing in the county, along with assisting in transitional housing options and rental advocacy. It was started 15 years ago and currently has 59 units in operation.

If the Council opts to not approve the loan it could risk not meeting the HOME grant deadlines for expenditures, set for Aug. 30 of this year, as required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Also on Tuesday the City Council will:

• Hear a request to amend the city budget for fiscal year 2012-13.

• Approve funding to complete the Fulkerth Road rehabilitation project.

• Approve a roof replacement for Fire Station No. 4.

• Appoint six community members to the Community Development Block Grant selection committee. The community members who have applied for the committee are: Abe Rojas, Ashour Badal, Ann Strahm, Tamara Sniezek, Bob Endsley, and Mary Jackson. The committee will select which applicants will receive some of the $90,000 in grants that will be awarded this year.

• Proclaim the upcoming week as Go Green Week in recognition of environmental efforts.

• Issue a proclamation honoring City of Turlock Technical Services Supervisor Del Olson on his 26-year career with the city and his forthcoming retirement with a city proclamation.

• In closed session the Council will hear an update on the ongoing litigation involving Daniel Mendonca and his lawsuit to stop the euthanasia of his dog Bolt.

The Turlock City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Yosemite Room of Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
