TC’s season ends at State Playoffs

POSTED March 12, 2013 8:56 p.m.

Turlock Christian High’s girls basketball season officially ended Saturday night in the second round of the CIF Division V State Playoffs. The Eagles faced off against International High in a competitive contest, but the Jaguars managed to stay a few steps ahead throughout the matchup and walked off their home court with a 61-47 victory.

“The confidence level was pretty high going into the game; we thought we could compete with them,” TC’s head coach Edwin Santiago said. “We did, but in the end we could not stop their inside game.”

It was the combination of Jasmine Sorrells and Danielle Palmer, both of which stand above 6-feet, that troubled the Eagles. After a tight, back and forth first half that saw TC enter halftime trailing by only five points, Palmer dropped six field goals and a handful of free throws to extend International’s lead while its defense stymied TC’s Halie Bergman and her supporting cast.

“She tore us up; we couldn’t stop her,” Santiago said of Palmer.

Despite being double teamed for most of the game, Bergman still managed to score 26 points as she routinely hit jump shots from the floor. Bergman also recorded 11 rebounds, six steals, and five blocked shots, but the effort wasn’t enough to overcome the Jaguars.

“It was a great and fun season. I think we went further than anybody expected us to go,” Santiago said.

Bergman will graduate at the end of the school year along with three other Eagles, leaving TC with a young but tested team for its final season in the Southern Athletic League.

“We’re definitely going to be a young team but our goal is still to win the Southern Athletic League title next season,” Santiago said. “It would mean a lot to us to win in our last season in the SAL.”

TC will join the Central California AA Conference at the beginning of the 2014 season.
