For as long as Phil King can remember, faith and music have played an integral part in his life. Now, the 23-year-old Turlock native is combining his two passions as his first ever album hits the market this week.

His self-titled album was released Tuesday and features 11 Christian and Gospel songs written and performed by King.

“My music lyrically is all about Jesus,” King said. “I'm totally unashamed of what I've been through and how He was there and how He brought me out. There's no other words I want stamped on my music other than what Jesus has done for me. The reason why is because it has changed me forever, and literally saved my life. The songs on this album were really the result of where my walk with God has been over the last two years or so.”

King was born and raised in Turlock and attended California State University, Stanislaus before relocating to Franklin, Tenn., where he now serves as a worship leader at Grace Church in Nashville.

From early on Gospel music was a major influence in King’s life. It was at Pitman High School that King developed an ear for guitar and piano that he would later incorporate into his own soulful style.

“I listened to a lot of soulful gospel music growing up,” King said. “This is totally where I learned how to sing. In high school I fell in love with stately piano playing and bluesy guitars. I love to play both of these instruments a lot at my concerts. Musically speaking, it’s definitely a blend of soulful blues, worship, and pop. Kind of like Stevie Wonder meets Jonny Lang meets Chris Tomlin and Jesus Culture.”

King will be returning to Turlock for a Turlock Gospel Mission benefit show May 10 at Monte Vista Chapel. King will be joined by the Christian group Leeland.

“It should be an awesome night,” King said. “I can't wait to come home and see everyone.”

King’s album, “Phil King” is available on itunes and Amazon, and Christian book stores.
