Top Livermore Lab scientist to speak at CSU Stanislaus

POSTED November 13, 2009 10:38 p.m.
John P. Knezovich, science and technology principal directorate at Laurence Livermore National Laboratory, will present a lecture entitled “Carbon Dating: Applications to Forensic Science” at CSU Stanislaus on Wednesday.
Knezovich will discuss the use of carbon dating in the Amerithrax investigation, which used new scientific methods to identify a suspect. The use of carbon isotope measurements developed by Knezovich’s team can determine the age of biological items of relatively recent origin, having a “far-reaching impact on future investigations,” according to a press release.
The program, hosted by the College of Natural Sciences, will commence at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Faculty Development Center. The guest lecture is free and open to the public.
Knezovich’s speech came about as a result of a Sept. 29 visit to LLNL by CSU Stanislaus officials and science faculty. CSU Stanislaus staff invited the LLNL scientists to tour the Turlock campus, leading to Wednesday’s visit.
