She was born and raised in Turlock. She attended Washington Grammar School and graduated from Turlock High School before going to beauty college. She was a homemaker and also worked seasonally for Hume Cannery. She then worked sales at Arden’s and at JayVee’s before retiring in the 1970s to stay home. Vera enjoyed child care, gardening, music — especially Elvis — and was very meticulous about her flower garden. She belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and, since 1997, to the Women of the Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her son, Darryl (Connie) Mello of Denair; daughters, Charlene Cook of Turlock and Dora Lucas of Turlock; sister, Gladys Winter and brother Vernon (Lee) Souza, both of Turlock; grandchildren, Angela Finn, Jason Mello, Terri Mello and Ryan Cook; and three great grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lena Souza of Turlock.
Allen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, please share memories and condolences at www.allenmortuary.com.
