With a pair of 69s in the tournament, Cal State Stanislaus golf's Paul Smith picked up another top 10 finish on Tuesday, this time at the Saint Martin's Invitational Preview at The Home Course.
Smith managed to erase a high second round score of 76 with a pair of 69s in both morning rounds to finish two-under 214 to finish eighth in a strong field. The individual medalist, Montana State Billings' Gage Huft, carded a 207 with a 66 on Tuesday. MSUB, however, finished 14th out of 15 teams.
Western Washington picked up the team victory with a 857 combined score. The Warriors couldn't recover from a high first round total (298) to finish 11th as a team with a 880 total. Grand Canyon (863) was third and Sonoma State (865) third.
The event, with a layout of par 72, 7103 yards, was held at The Home Course, which will serve as the site of the 2013 NCAA West Region Championships May 6-8.
Prior to that tournament, however, the Warriors will host the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, April 15-16, at the Turlock Golf and Country Club. Cal State Stanislaus then take part in the CCAA Championships the following week in Paso Robles. Cal State Stanislaus will also serve as the host at Hunter Ranch Golf Club.
Back in Dupont, where the Warriors ended a two-tournament winning streak, Smith led the group with his third straight top 10 finish. He had ranked second at the Coyote Classic, followed by a seventh place showing at the SoCal Intercollegiate. It was also Smith's fifth top 10 finish during the 2012-13 season.
Also participated this week for Stanislaus were Trevor Clayton, who had a two-under 70 in Monday's round two, finished 18th at 217 for a top 20 finish. Rob Damschen was unable to rebound from a 80 in round one and finished with a 221. He did shoot a 67 Tuesday afternoon.
Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors were Tyler Barker (230) and Jeff Neeley (235).
