Delhi High took another step towards a potential second place finish in the Southern Athletic League and an improved post-season placement with Friday’s 10-0 defeat of Gustine High. The Hawks earned their second consecutive win with a combination of solid bats from the plate and a barrage of consistent pitches from sophomore Alyssa Stockton.

“We’re doing well, we just got to stay patient,” Delhi’s head coach Tami Tela said. “I look forward to Turlock Christian on Tuesday and Le Grand in our last game next Friday before playoffs start.”

Despite having a playoff berth in the pocket already, Delhi entered Friday’s game with energy and took it to the Redskins from the very beginning. Alicia Knight got the offense moving with a RBI double in the first inning and was instantly followed by Bree Lopez who had an RBI double of her own. Though the mode of victory was runs by committee, the most impressive scoring play of the day came in the third inning when Bianca Nunez ripped a three-run triple and all but extinguished Gustine’s hope for a win.

While Hawk batters exploited the Redskin defense, Stockton was showing all those in attendance why she’s the state leader in strikeouts. In her complete performance on Friday, Knight struck out ten batters and allowed no hits. It was her second no hitter this season and the effort upped her season strikeout total to 283.

“There’s always a good chance to win when she’s on the mound,” Tela said of her sophomore pitcher.

Delhi must now take on TC on Tuesday before its shot at current second place team Le Grand. If the Hawks win out they can tie for second with the Bulldogs.

“We want to win these next two games and keep it going into the playoffs,” Tela said. “I think we have really good chance in the playoffs. I really, really do.”
