Bomb scares prompt school lockdown, road closure

Lander Avenue Bomb Scare

POSTED April 30, 2013 5:41 p.m.

Two suspicious devices found Morning morning on Lander Avenue prompted a school lock down and a road closure as the county bomb squad investigated.

Cunningham Elementary School was put on a lock down for several hours and Lander Avenue between Linwood and Glenwood avenues was closed to traffic for part of the morning and afternoon.

The school was put on lockdown just as a precaution.

Neither device turned out to be an explosive.

The first device was found shortly before 9 a.m. in the 1600 block of Lander by city maintenance crews working in a median. The workers found something that appeared to be a modified flashlight, Turlock Police Sgt. Stephen Webb said.

The bomb squad was called to the scene and the device was disposed of safely. It was not an explosive device.

The second device was reported a few minutes after 9 a.m. in the 1500 block of Lander, which is county territory.

Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said a briefcase was found next to a power pole. The bomb squad used their robot to x-ray the item and found it was an empty case, Bejaran said.
