Veterans focus of job fair

POSTED April 30, 2013 11:41 p.m.

An upcoming job fair is hoping to put more veterans to work.

Of the nearly 2 million California veterans, about 200,000 of them are unemployed, according to the California Employment Development Department. The unemployment rate among younger veterans was particularly high last year.  In veterans age 20 to 24, the unemployment rate was 37.1 percent in 2011, more than double the 17.6 percent rate of comparably aged nonveterans.

The EDD is hosting a job fair — aimed at veterans, but open to anyone — from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Martin Petersen Center, 720 12th St., Modesto.

Admission is free to employers and job seekers.

Job seekers are encouraged to dress for success and bring plenty of copies of résumés.

Over 50 employers have committed to attend the event, according to the EDD, and space is still available for additional companies.

For more information, call Jerry Timothy at 576-6118.
