Pitman soccer keeps playoff hopes alive

Pitman's Katlyn Hanf gets her head in the game during the Pride's matchup against Golden Valley.

The Pitman High girls soccer team tied 2-2 against Golden Valley High after a shaky second half start in Monday's crucial Central California Conference matchup.

“It was a lack of communication, we had 20 shots. It’s not that we didn’t have our opportunities, but unfortunately those lapses cause some misses, but I am proud of the way these girls played,” Pitman’s head coach Christina Garcia said.

Pride freshman Rayana Plancarte headed the first of two goals in the 5th minute of play. The Cougars scored in the 1st  and 8th minutes to begin the second half.

“It’s not her first header she has had quite a few,” Garcia said. “It’s great that what they’re doing in practice, [they] are able to execute in the game.”

In the 24th minute, Plancarte headed in her second goal of the game after a nice cross from Katlyn Hanf to tie the game and the Pride never looked back. The Pride girls are ranked 54th in the state and have scored 34 goals so far for the year.

“We just need to play good soccer; if we do that, we're gonna win, and make it to playoffs, whether it’s first, second or third,” Garcia said. “Some things we’ve been telling the girls is to work on is taking it down the side, putting it across, it’s something they have been doing in practice and the girls are executing in the games.”

Now sitting at 6-5-3, the Pride are one conference game away from making that happen as they will play CCC leaders and 33rd ranked in state, Turlock High (9-4-1), at 4 p.m. today.

“[As] far as playing Turlock, It’s never about what place we are in, it's mainly about beating Turlock and playing well against them,” Garcia said. “It’s a fun rivalry, you know I am not from here, but I have taken on the fun with the rivalry, [and I'm] looking forward to Wednesday.”
