Abduction attempt reported in Denair

POSTED November 20, 2009 6:29 p.m.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a possible kidnapping attempt in Denair of a high school student as she walked home Wednesday afternoon.
The sheriff’s department is crediting the girl’s quick thinking actions as saving her from the possible abduction.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday as the girl was walking home from Denair High School.
The girl was walking northbound on Santa Fe Avenue. She was between Zeering Road and Greenview Drive and a truck pulling a trailer was approaching from the south. The truck swung across Santa Fe in front of the girl, forcing her to walk around the rig, the sheriff’s department said.
A male passenger got out of the rig and started walking towards the girl, calling out to her with obscenities, according to the sheriff’s department.
The girl told the sheriff’s department that she pretended to be talking on her cell phone and said, “I see you dad.”
At hearing this, the suspect stopped and hurried back to the truck, saying something along the lines of, “let’s get out of here,” the sheriff’s department reported.
The passenger was described as a white man in his 40s and unshaven. The driver was described as a Hispanic man with a beard.
The truck resembled an older Peterbilt model. The girl said it was a reddish-orange tractor trailer rig with a white trailer.
The Denair Unified School District sent a notice out to parents about the incident and included safety tips from the sheriff’s department about walking home from school. The sheriff’’s department advises children to be aware of their surroundings and whenever possible to not walk alone, but rather go with a friend. If a child is approached or does notice anything suspicious they should go to the nearest home or place they know, make a disturbance, call for help, and notify authorities.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 525-7114.
